Black Water Pumping Station
On your right, you can see the black water pumping station. The black water is collected by vacuum toilets. As they only require one litre per flush, it is highly concentrated! On the ground floor of the pumping station, several compressors create negative pressure to transport the black water via a vacuum system to the work yard. It is stored in two tanks in the basement. Once collected, the black water is heated and pumped into an anaerobic digester for biogas production. To increase the biogas yield, co-substrates—delivered regularly by truck—are added. At the same time, substrates from the digester are recirculated to the pumping station before returning to the digester. This circulation is essential for maintaining optimal conditions and ensuring efficient biogas production. Oh, and before I forget — on your left, you can see the building of the local heating supplier. I’ll explain more later.

Black Water Treatment
Ahead, you can see the digester, where black water and co-substrates undergo anaerobic treatment. The resulting biogas is stored in a gas tank and then used in a combined heat and power plant to generate energy. The electricity, after deducting the plant’s own consumption, is fed into the public grid, while the heat maintains the substrate temperature in the digester and supplies thermal energy to the residential district through the local heat provider. How smart is that! At present, the digestate is discharged into the public sewer. To use all its potential, you will support our team to explore options for nutrient recovery!

JESSS consists of 3 Levels, each level comes with unique tasks.
You will find your To-dos for each level listed in numerical order on the left side of the screen (in red). You can also read the details of each task here by hovering your mouse over the number. Once you’ve completed a task, the icon turns green.
To help you find your way around, you’ll see a Map icon below the tasks; clicking it will open a map showing the different sections of the work yard marked by theme.
At the top of the screen, you’ll see four indicators that help you keep track of your progress:
On the left, you can see how many Questions the Level has and how many you’ve already completed.
• Next to that, you can see the Total Score for your current Level and how many points you’ve earned so far.
On the right, you can see how much Time you have left to complete all the tasks across all three levels.
Next to that, you can see the Total Score for all 3 Levels and how many points you’ve earned so far.
At the bottom of the screen, you’ll find a Progress bar for the entire game.
Once you have completed all tasks of a level you can come back to the control room to start the next level. There is no return to a previous level.

Grey Water Treatment
Let’s turn to the grey water. Its treatment is under active research at our pilot plant, where technologies are tested, evaluated and optimized under real-world conditions. The grey water treatment consists of collection tank, sieve, fixed-bed bioreactor and an ultrafiltration membrane. The treated grey water is not classified as drinking water but meets all hygienic and chemical standards for service water. It can be safely used for toilet flushing or irrigation and some is already supplied to a nearby business park. Any remaining service water is discharged into the local rainwater pond for low-water elevation.

The Anchor is Europe’s largest urban district equipped with a source-separated sanitation system. To maximise synergies among the wastewater, water and energy sector, grey and black water are managed separately. With this tour, we invite you to explore the HAMBURG WATER CYCLE® and gain insight into an innovative and sustainable approach to wastewater management in urban areas.


The 360° tour consists of 22 360° panoramic images. First, the collection and treatment of rainwater, greywater, and blackwater in the residential area are examined. Next, the management of the latter through two material flows at the works yard is presented. The INTERREG research project ANCHOR (Anthropocene Nutrient and Water Control for Holistic Resilience and Recovery, 2023–2026), funded by the European Union, is dedicated to the study of water-sensitive urban neighborhoods.



Objective and Approach


Urban regions are increasingly facing climate-related challenges. These include prolonged droughts, heat waves, and an increase in heavy rainfall events. The impacts on the water cycle are diverse and have a direct effect on water consumption (e.g., consumption peaks during heat waves), water availability (e.g., water shortages, flooding), and water quality (e.g., low discharge volumes, salinization of freshwater bodies in coastal areas). Heat islands, water stress, and flooding further intensify the need for action.


In response to the challenges outlined above, our cities must be made more climate-resilient. To initiate and support the necessary transformation processes, the ANCHOR research project focuses on the neighborhood planning level. Together with partner institutions in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Sweden, cross-sectoral and transdisciplinary strategies for sustainable urban resource infrastructures are being developed, and the areas of settlement, waste, and energy management are being systematically linked. A prerequisite for this is the separate collection of partial wastewater streams from households. The focus is therefore on neighborhoods in Ghent (BE), Hamburg (DE), Helsingborg (SE), and Kerkrade (NL), where partial wastewater streams such as rainwater, graywater, and blackwater are already collected separately. The goal is now to explore possibilities for resource-oriented management.


By spring 2026, insights are to be gained at all locations on topics such as the analytical characteristics of individual material flows, the operational organization of vacuum systems, resource-specific accounting, and the societal evaluation of system approaches, as well as public communication regarding knowledge transfer. The insights and tools gained are intended to support municipal decision-makers in the transformation toward water-sensitive and energy-efficient neighborhoods.
